Four Types of Bule in the Big Durian

As they say, a good example deserves to be imitated. As the honourable reveller distinguishes a number of "revelling" types, I have (after many years of observing the population) determined the four kinds or types of bule guys residing in Jakarta.

By bule guys I'm only referring to white, single, straight Caucasian males who are working in Jakarta as expats or teachers, or bule guys who live on a pension. So tourists are excluded from the observation.

I have been working in Jakarta for over 28 years and retired 2 years ago. I'm still living in Indonesia (Bali now). I tell this so you know I'm not just another nitwit who's just arrived in Jakarta and thinks that he knows it all - my conclusions have some truth in them.

Here are the four types I have determined:

1:  The Playboy type (20%)
2:  The Steady type (50%)
3:  The Reveller type (25%)
4:  The Lonely type (5%)

The Playboy type

Most often but not always young and good looking guys, often working as well paid expats, but sometimes just working as teachers. They don't frequent the naughty bars, but like to go to upscale discos and pubs. Most of these  guys have many girlfriends at the same time. Their girlfriends are from the middle or higher classes, these guys rarely go with girls from the lower classes. They never pay for sex and also almost never sleep with the same girl two nights in a row, and they also never sleep alone. They often meet their girls in malls or the upscale nightlife venues or through friends or the Internet.

The Steady type

By far the largest group, some of them are young expats but by and large this type is between 30 and 45 years of age. Some of them are serious guys who don't really like going out (anymore) or people who fall in love easily, or who want to settle down. They could have been in group one or group three before - but have somewhere along the way fallen in love with a girl, or they have gotten enough of hunting. Some of them actually end up marrying their girlfriend or some just keep her for the duration of their stay in Indonesia. Most of them are quite faith full to their girlfriend and don't "dine outside" more then once or twice a week, which is considered very faithful in Indonesia.

The Reveller type

The second largest group, they are mostly older (40 to 70) well paid expats, or pensioners often divorced from their western wives. Some are English teachers. They frequent the bars often going there every night, but at least two or three times a week. They almost never take a steady girlfriend and averagely sleep with one to three girls per week. They often pay for those one night stands.

The Lonely type

This is a rare breed - but believe it or not, this type does exist! They can be found in all ages. They are well paid expats, teachers or pensioners. They don't get an Indonesian girlfriend and rarely take a bar girl, or a girl from another place. Reasons for that can be that they can be extremely choosy or simply not interested in the girls, or they may have physical limitations (short, bold, body deformations etc) or they may severely lack social skills. Some of them are shy or completely lack self confidence. A certain percentage (25%) of this type doesn't sleep with an Indonesian girl during their entire stay in Indonesia! Most of the  guys in this category still sleep occasionally with an Indonesian girl (mostly not bar girls) averagely about one to four girls per month. They almost never pay for sex and rarely sleep more than once with the same  girl.

The Dabbler type

Has some of the reveller spirit, but unlike a true reveller, isn't on the Blok every night or even every week.   Sometimes finds a Blok girl, sometimes finds a non-Blok girl, sometimes pays for it, sometimes doesn't.  Often he doesn't take a girl home at all. Doesn't have a steady girl (in Indonesia) but has a couple of regulars on his handphone.
